On The Way To Alone

She watches helpless
as his brightness fades.
So strong to be struck down so soon.

Years they had spent together
now slip like smoke
from her clutching, trembling fingers.

She remembers quiet walks
on secluded beaches,
miles and miles from home,

And the silence between statements
conveying more than words.
Two hearts speaking.

She touches the hands
that held her soul in safe harbor
against the storm of life.

So many years, protected,
within the realm of each other's arms,
only to slip.

She winces, cringes.
The peace of their existence
slapped away by the quick, hard
hand of fate.

Shivering and solitary,
No haven will shelter her.
All is exposed to wind and water.

She sits, anchor lost,
spinning full-faced into the driving wind,
left to brace the raging storm alone.
