What Do You Desire?

She sat quiet and alone,
the park bench trying desperately
to comfort her.
Birds sang unnoticed as a tear dropped
to her soft wrist. So I asked. . .

He screamed angrily at someone
inside the still banging screen door as he
stormed down the steps.
Birds sang unnoticed as he kicked passionately
at a flower on the curb. So I asked. . .

She staggered, teetered
in a drunken stupor, under midday sun,
no one coming close.
Birds sang unnoticed as the bottle shattered
at her feet. So I asked. . .

He stood motionless,
on the westward end of the pier,
staring down the dying sun.
Birds sang unnoticed as he pulled the revolver
from his coat, thumb cocking hammer. So I asked. . .
